Bad tankers go into ambush - Less chance of it getting mullared by proper AV or just lots of ppl spamming AV in general, OB and installations
Skirmish prepares you for general shitstorm and what to do when you in the middle of it, it tends to be unpredictable and can test you as a tanker to an extent
Problem is always this for me, bring out a blaster they bring out a railgun and snipe you for the rest of the match while they are in the redline and you have no chance of hitting them - i do this with a railgun to an extent but after the tank is dead i then roam a little bit around the map |

generally tanks aren't worth it unless you are really good as proto and advanced AV gear becomes more and more common tanks will become less common, even the best infantry support in the world won't stop 2 or 3 proto swarmers/forge gunners up in the hills killing your tank in 1 volley. This will probably get extended into most maps with how it's working out. Railgun tanks suppress just as well as blaster tanks, but have the ability to kill infantry with splash damage countering some AV corner hugging tactics. They will kill forge gunners at range. They will OHKO proto suits without damage mods, something that blaster turrets have a hard time doing at mid ranges. The trick is to rotate the tank to boost your turret rotation. Blaster tanks do have their place in the current metagame, but IMHO it's only because most tankers haven't been converted to full time railgunners yet.
Have you used a railgun?
It aint easy trying to hit the AV guys who pop out for a second to launch AV at you 400m away on that hill, you need a sniper and even then it will take 2 shots
Its easier to find cover and rep instead and balls to em

I think it's worth mentioning that, without any AUR expenditure at all, I can build a 270,000 ISK Sica that can go up against up to 3 Swarm Launchers (Militia or Standard) and gun the AV guys down before they kill me. If I have gunners, I can sometimes survive long enough to clear 2 Forge Gunners.
Small turrets can reach the top of the hill 300m away?
